This week we learned about astronomy. We learned how the moon rotates, and revolves around the earth. We learned about all the moon phases too. To help use learn this, we used this Lunar Phase Simulator. We also tried making easy ways to remember the phases of the moon.
The moon rotates one whole time as it revolves around the whole earth. The moon takes 29½ days to revolve around the earth. There are many phases of the moon. It starts with the New Moon, when the moon is not illuminated at all. Now an easy way to remember the phases afterwards is to think: waxing then waning. The waning phases are opposite of waxing phases. Waxing phases are cg (my initials!) (crescent then gibbous) so waning is the opposite gc (gibbous then crescent). In the middle of waxing and waning is a full moon (the moon is fully illuminated). In between crescent and gibbous is the first quarter. In between gibbous and crescent is the third quarter. That’s all you need to know about the phases.
If you some how get stuck in the middle of nowhere, and it happens to be a clear and you see the moon, this will be good to know. Or if you want to get extra credit for Finley’s class this will be useful. If you are an astronomy, you would know this too.
