+Inner and Outer Planets

Inner planets are known as rocky planets or terrestrial planets

Inner planets and outer planets are separated by the asteroid belt.

Outer Planets are known as gas giants

+ Moon Characteristics

Craters- impact of meteorites

Maria- large smooth dark areas

Rilles- trenches

Near side and Far side- we only see the near side of the moon

Rays- spray or ejection of materials from meteorite impacts

Mountains- highest rises up to 5km high on the lunar surface

+Causes of planetary Orbit

If a planet is moving perpendicular to an object’s pull (e.g. the sun) and is going at a slower rate than the escape velocity, the planet would orbit the object. An escape velocity is when a planet is going at a certain speed to escape the pull of an object. Space ships must go as faster or faster than the escape velocity of earth to travel to the moon or a planet. We used a simulation to demonstrate this.

+Comparisons of Comets/Meteors and Meteorites

Comets- made of ice, gas, and dust

Meteors- made of stone mainly and burns in entry of atmosphere

Meteorites- meteor that crashes onto surface
